Paul sheldon books5/30/2023 ![]() ![]() Since Misery begins, Paul Sheldon, the author of the wildly popular Misery Chastain novels, has just completed the manuscript of his new crime novel, Fast Cars. It’s been staged as a critically acclaimed and Tony-nominated Broadway play with. Misery was nominated for the World Fantasy Award for Best Novel in 1988, and was adapted into a Hollywood film starring James Caan and Kathy Bates (who won the Academy Award for her performance as Annie Wilkes). ![]() King has talked about the way Sheldon’s struggles with writer’s block and his desire to branch out past his most famous characters and genre have been based on feelings he experienced. Misery explores themes of obsession and unhealthy identification with fictional characters, while also serving as a musing on the writing process. She takes him to her home, seemingly to deal with his injuries, but after she finds out that he killed off the personality of Misery in his latest book, she turns abusive and keeps him captive to force him to write a brand new book changing the character’s end - regardless of what it requires. One of King’s most popular and effective books, it centers on Paul Sheldon, a prolific novelist best known for his Victorian-era romance novels starring the character Misery Chastain. ![]() ![]() ![]() it's an interesting theme, but i'm glad the book didn't include any ACTUAL human vore. or to consume someone because you know it's what's best for them. ![]() ![]() My friend and i both read this in one sitting tonight, and somehow she predicted the vore from the very beginning! to love someone enough to want to consume them. ![]() much of the visceral nastiness seems to be there for shock value. there's no character development, and very little emotional resonance. i also enjoy the themes of loneliness and misguided devotion.īut the ending is abrupt, and the book doesn't feel as meaningful as i'd hoped. i was extremely intrigued, and interested to watch their relationship quickly evolve from respectful friendship to demanding sugar mommy situation. I love the premise: a short novella in epistolary format, chronicling the odd relationship between two women over emails and IMs in the year 2000. The book's acknowledgements describe it as a "bizarre fantasy of manipulation and depravity" and a "macabre tale of online lust and perversion" and a "nasty little nugget of terror." but i mostly just thought it was gross. ![]() The shadow and bone trilogy5/30/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() It also means she's the only one who has the potential to destroy the Shadow Fold, making her a target for those who'd use her as a pawn – namely General Kirigan, a.k.a. ![]() Her newly-discovered Sun Summoner powers mean she's a Grisha, someone with the ability to manipulate matter at the molecular level. During a dangerous mission with their military unit to cross the Shadow Fold, the swath of pure darkness that cleaves their kingdom in half, Alina discovers rare powers thought to be a myth. With the kingdom currently at war, both are conscripted into the First Army. The main protagonist, Alina Starkov (Jessie Mei Li), is an orphan who grew up in the country of Ravka with her best friend, Malyen "Mal" Oretsev (Archie Renaux).
